In short
The energy arc is how intensity moves over time: where a piece starts small, where it grows, where it peaks and where it drops away. Every listener feels that line, including people who have never read a note. The trap is thinking energy means volume. It does not. Energy is a sum of how much is sounding, how high and how low it reaches, how much rhythmic activity there is, and how much space is left.
The main controls are density, register, rhythmic activity, harmonic rhythm, timbre, dynamics, space, the number of voices, and where the section sits in the form. Each one can be moved on its own, and moving one at a time is how you learn what each actually does.
How it works
The rule that decides everything: contrast is relative. Energy is not a level but a difference. In notation, dynamic markings have always been relative, and a chorus feels big because the verse was small. Take the small part away and the big part stops being big, which is why so many demos feel flat despite everything being loud.

- A chorus that hits because the pre-chorus dropped almost everything
- A last verse with the drums removed so the final chorus can land
- A dance track where the only thing that changed over sixteen bars was the filter
