Sound Design

This is not about how a synthesizer works but about how you use one to make something that did not exist. You start at an empty patch, ask what the sound has to do, and every decision follows from that answer.

  • init patch
  • 3 layers
  • modulation is life

Where you run into this

  • Film music
  • Game audio

In short

Almost every synth has an initialisation patch: one oscillator, a simple waveform, filter open, organ-style envelope, no effects. Boring, and exactly the right place to start. A preset is someone else's endpoint, and starting there means you spend your time undoing decisions you never made.

The feeling

Designing a sound rather than browsing for one changes the relationship with the instrument permanently.

How it works

Ask the role first, because it is a technical question and not a philosophical one. Where does this sound sit in the arrangement, which register does it own, does it need to cut through or sit underneath, and does it need to change over time. The answers decide oscillator, filter and envelope before you touch a knob.

Where you run into this

  • A patch that sounds finished until it is heard in the track
  • A sound that only works because something is modulating slowly
  • A preset that needed three parameters changed rather than a replacement

In practice

Build in layers: a core that carries the identity, movement that keeps it alive, and space that places it. Modulation is what separates a sound from a living sound, and effects are shapers rather than a finishing coat.
